Dwarf planets Ceres, Pluto, and Eris

In this image, from left to right, are the dwarf planets Ceres, Pluto, and Eris. Eris was discovered in 2003 and is now the largest of the known dwarf planets. It is believed to be slightly more massive than Pluto and follows a highly eccentric orbit that alternately brings it as close as the orbits of Neptune and Pluto and as far as over twice Plutos furthest distance from the Sun.
Pluto, a Kuiper object, was demoted to the status of dwarf planet in 2006 when the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reviewed Plutos status in light of the recently discovered Eris, also a Kuiper object, but somewhat larger than Pluto. Pluto and Eris are also considered trans-Neptunian objects, or trans-Neptunian dwarf planets, because they orbit the Sun at a greater distance on average than Neptune

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the trio of dwarf planets Ceres, Pluto, and Eris. From left to right, we are presented with a visual representation of these celestial bodies that have fascinated astronomers for years. Eris, discovered in 2003, now holds the title of being the largest known dwarf planet. Its mass slightly surpasses that of Pluto and it follows an eccentric orbit that alternates between coming as close as Neptune's orbit and reaching over twice the distance from the Sun than Pluto does. Pluto, once considered our ninth planet, was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). This decision came after Eris was discovered - another Kuiper object larger than Pluto. Both Pluto and Eris fall under the category of trans-Neptunian objects due to their average distance from the Sun exceeding that of Neptune. The image highlights these three fascinating astronomical objects against a black background. It is digitally generated artwork that allows us to compare their sizes and appreciate their unique characteristics within our solar system. The composition also includes elements such as asteroids in order to provide further context. Walter Myers' creation offers both scientific insight into these intriguing celestial bodies while also evoking a sense of wonderment about our vast universe.
