Penarth - Old - The Pier and Esplanade pictured - April 1950. *So Penarth Piers getting another facelift, courtesy of a welcome 1.68m in lottery cash aimed at returning the old girl to her former glory with the bonus of a new-look pavilion and cinema. But renovation is nothing new, it simply costs more these days. When fire hit the pier in 1931 it took just 3, 157 to restore it. But it was worth it, as it was in 1947 and 1966 after other calamities. Yes, the old piers had its moments since the grand opening in 1895 when they stuck their 750-ft long finger out into the choppy channel. The elders of Penarth knew they were on to a winner, for the first paddle steamers were churning up and down that channel and the eager crowds, besotted by the briny during Victorias twilight years, had to step aboard from somewhere. It was the great age of pier- building. Westons Grand Pier opened in June, 1904, while Southend-on-Sea trumped everyone, their 6, 000-feet-long contestant taking awed visitors more than a mile out to sea. Southports pier was about half that length but Blackpool, on the verge of becoming Britains greatest holiday centre, had three, summer stages for the countrys biggest stars during the glory years
