Ut Pictura Poesis, 1745-1746. Creator: Charles-Francois Hutin (French, 1715-1776)

Ut Pictura Poesis, 1745-1746. Hutins drawing is an allegorical celebration of academic artistic training. The words UT PICTURA POESIS engraved on the stone tablet translate " as is painting, so is poetry." Classical figures throughout the grand hall discuss their work as they practice different methods of making images. In the foreground, putti sculpt a portrait bust of Louis XV; behind them artists practice drawing a nude model. Among the sculptures in the room are the Farnese Hercules and the Venus de Medici, both famous Roman marbles in Italy, where Hutin trained from 1737 to 1742. In the upper right, Fame flies with trumpets above Minerva, the patron goddess of the arts, holding a paintbrush and palette as she drives out Ignorance and Envy

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Ut Pictura Poesis, 1745-1746" captures the essence of academic artistic training in a grand hall. Created by Charles-Francois Hutin, a French artist from the 18th century, this drawing is an allegorical celebration of the connection between painting and poetry. In the foreground of the image, adorable putti can be seen sculpting a portrait bust of Louis XV, showcasing their skill and dedication to their craft. Behind them, artists diligently practice drawing a nude model, honing their techniques under the watchful eyes of classical figures scattered throughout the room. Amongst these figures are famous sculptures such as the Farnese Hercules and Venus de Medici - both renowned Roman marbles that Hutin would have encountered during his training in Italy from 1737 to 1742. These sculptures serve as inspiration for aspiring artists striving for greatness. In the upper right corner of the image, Fame soars with trumpets above Minerva - patron goddess of arts. Holding a paintbrush and palette while driving out Ignorance and Envy, Minerva symbolizes wisdom and creativity prevailing over negativity. This artwork showcases Hutin's mastery in combining various mediums like red chalk on cream laid paper along with black chalk, graphite, gray washes, and watercolor. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art through Heritage Art/Heritage Images (not affiliated with any commercial use), this print stands as a testament to Hutin's talent and serves as an enduring tribute to academic artistic training.
