Royal Feast in a Garden (recto) from the double-page frontispiece of a Shahnama
Royal Feast in a Garden (recto) from the double-page frontispiece of a Shahnama of Firdausi (Persian, about 934-1020), 1444. The painting on the verso of this folio is the first half of a double-page frontispiece now detached from a Shahnama (Book of Kings) manuscript. CMA 1956.10 is the left half of the frontispiece. As though setting the scene for royal stories and activities, these two opening pages of Irans national epic present a luxurious gathering in an idyllic outdoor setting. Groups of nobles and international diplomats have come bearing gifts, including costly vessels and hunting animals. From the upper left two trained cheetahs, a falcon, and horses are led into the scene. Drama and intrigue seem to be brewing, given the knowing glances and whispers between figures and the four men being driven away by a guard at the lower left

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of "Royal Feast in a Garden" from a Shahnama manuscript, created by Firdausi in 1444. The double-page frontispiece depicts an opulent gathering set amidst a serene outdoor backdrop, serving as a grand introduction to Iran's national epic. The scene unfolds with nobles and diplomats gathered together, presenting lavish gifts such as precious vessels and hunting animals. Trained cheetahs, a falcon, and horses are gracefully led into the picture from the upper left corner, adding an element of excitement to the composition. However, beneath this apparent splendor lies an undercurrent of drama and intrigue. Whispers pass between figures while knowing glances suggest hidden secrets. At the lower left corner, four men are being escorted away by a guard – their fate uncertain. The painting is rendered with meticulous detail using opaque watercolors infused with gold and silver accents. It exemplifies the artistic style prevalent during the Timurid period in Shiraz. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection (CMA 1956.10), this detached frontispiece evokes both awe and curiosity about ancient Persian culture. Its rich heritage transports viewers back to a time when royal stories unfolded against idyllic landscapes like this one. This print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images allows us to appreciate not only the skillful craftsmanship but also provides insight into historical narratives that continue to captivate audiences today.
