On Thursday 19th November 2009 over 31cm of rain fell in 24 hours on the Cumbrian mountains. The single largest rainfall total in the British Isles since records began. It caused unprecedented flooding, with Cockermouth being particularly badly hit after both the Cocker and Derwent burst their banks. The main street was 5 feet underwater and £ millions worth of damage was caused. This shot shows a flock of escaped farmyard geese on Cockermouth Main Streeton Saturday morning after the floodwaters had receeded

Quack-tastic Escape - Geese Take Over Cockermouth Main Street After Epic Flood!

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In a scene straight out of a feathered fantasy, these mischievous farmyard geese decided to make the most of the chaos caused by an extraordinary deluge in Cumbria. As floodwaters receded from Cockermouth's main street after record-breaking rainfall, this daring flock took advantage of their newfound freedom. With the town still reeling from the devastating floods, these plucky avian adventurers waddled their way through the deserted streets, leaving residents and emergency services amazed. The sight of geese strutting confidently amidst destruction and debris brought some much-needed comic relief to an otherwise somber situation. As they honked their way past damaged buildings and waterlogged cars, it was clear that these birds were on a mission – perhaps searching for greener pastures or simply enjoying their moment in the spotlight. Their audacious escapade captured hearts around the world as people marveled at nature's resilience even in times of crisis. This photograph by Ashley Cooper perfectly encapsulates both the devastation caused by extreme weather events and Mother Nature's ability to surprise us with unexpected moments of levity. It serves as a reminder that even in times of hardship, there is always room for laughter and hope – especially when geese take over your local high street!
